"The function of any recurrent activity, such as the punishment of a crime, or a funeral ceremony, is the part it plays in the social life as a whole and therefore the contribution it makes to the maintenance of the structural community… By the definition here offered ‘function’ is the contribution which a partial activity makes to the total activity of which it is a part. The function of a particular social usage is the contribution it makes to the total social life as the functioning of the total social system."

"[A] society that is thrown into a condition of functional disunity or inconsistency (…dysnomia) will not die… but will continue to struggle toward some sort of eunomia, some kind of social health… The one kind of change which the anthropologist can observe is the disintegration of social structures. Yet even here we can observe and compare spontaneous movements towards reintegration."

Why must we define ourselves thus? Perhaps because it's easier to deal with self-discovery if it comes in small, bite-sized chunks?

What am I talking about? Why, SURVEYS, of course!

1.What's on your bedside table?
At school, that table is, in fact, my desk, and on it, one may find my alarm clock, small lamp (whose lampshade appears to have a variant of marijuana fronds embedded in it - though I suspect they are merely maple leaves or similar), sometimes my laptop, often my homework, at least one scrunchy, and at all times various post-its and other notes to self.

2. What's the geekiest part of your music collection?
Actually, I think one would have to look pretty hard to find something non-geeky in that collection. Although the recent addition of Tonic may qualify as relatively normal.

3. What do you eat when you raid the fridge at night?
Cereal, granola bars (yeah, yeah, they're not in the fridge - sue me), water, yogurt, and occasionally, cheese.

4. If you could have plastic surgery, what would you have done?
Nothing, thank you.

5. Do you have a completely irrational fear?
Being noticed by people on my way to the shower. *shrug*

6. What is the little physical habit that gives away your insecure moments?
I chew the insides of my lips - although I do that when I'm concentrating, too.

7. Do you ever have to beg?
No. I've been endowed with considerable powers of
persuasion. ;-)

8. Do you have too many love interests?
Not romantic ones, no.

9. Do you know anyone famous?
Not personally, but I know people who know people who do. It is a SMALL planet.

10. Describe your bed.
Twin-sized, no head or foot-boards (the head-board disappeared over the summer), mattress pad, fitted sheet, regular sheet, fleece throw, pillow. SO interesting.

11. Spontaneous or plan?
Less spontaneous than I used to be, but I've been known
to revert. ;-)

12. Who should play you in a movie about your life?
*shrug* No actress I know would deign to be seen as an acne-riddled, introverted, college geek. But it's probably for the best. :-)

13. Do you know how to play poker?
Generally speaking, yes. I do avoid the "strip" variety, however. :-D

14. What do you carry with you at all times?
My cross, my dignity, my faith, my keys, and if time and pockets allow, a book.

15. How do you drive?
Like your grandmother.

16. What do you miss most about being little?
Being in good shape and having better access to my own imagination.

17. Are you happy with your given name?
Certainly. Especially knowing I could have easily ended up "Gwendolyn." *shudder*

18. What color is your bedroom?
At home - sea foam green. At school - off-white. Both completely devoid of the decoration so universally associated with college kids - no band posters, shiny things, Christmas lights, or quotes of the day.

19. What was the last song you were listening to?
Probably something recently acquired from Andyland.

20. Have you ever been in a school play?
Yes, several, though I'm more often found lurking backstage and in the catwalk, not to mention the box office.

21. Have you ever been in love?
D'you know, I don't think I have. Huh.

22. Do you like yourself and believe in yourself?
Generally, I do, and yes.

23. Do you think you're cute?
Nah.

24. Do you consider yourself to be a nice person?
Yep. :-)

Seriously, that's not enough ways to define one's self. I'm gonna have a few words with the author of this survey. How do these things even get started?

*sigh* Well, that was a nice way to waste 20 minutes.

Ciao.
