The Notebook is a lovely, heartwarming, and heart-wrenching film. Yes, it follows the classic wartime movie theme, so yes, it is easy to see where the story is going. But the point isn't to mystify you; it's to move you. And it does.
Now, I don't ever cry at movies, save one or two memorable exceptions. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is A.I. when David and Gigolo Joe are in the arena at the Flesh Fair and they're about to be melted with hot wax, and David's screaming out, "Don't burn me!" over and over again.
... Man.
Yeah, I can't watch that movie much.
Anyway, I think the reason The Notebook hit me so hard was because of the elderly characters played by Gena Rowlands and James Garner. They just remind me so much of Nancy and EB and what those two are going through right now - holding on to each other against the worst possible odds, weathering the storm, loving through pain, etc.
It makes me feel, and I needed that today.
Time for bed now.
